Apple is constantly updating the capabilities of iPhone cameras and their recording capacity, but those benefits can create challenges for users with slower Internet and Cell Network connection speeds. If you are experiencing issues when uploading video from your iPhone or iPad to Ensemble Video, we are here to help you. Here are a couple simple things to consider when uploading content from an iPhone.
Video Recording Quality
If you are running any iOS since iOS9 on anything from an iPhone 6, you have the ability to change what resolution the camera records video at. A lower-quality setting can be the way to go if you are having problems uploading your video to Ensemble Video. It is also a good option if you're low on storage. Making the switch is fast and easy — here's how.
Go to Settings > Camera, tap either Record Video or Record Slow-mo, and select your preferred resolution from the listed options. Keep in mind that the higher the resolution and frame rate, the more space the finished video will take up on your iPhone, meaning the longer it will take to upload to Ensemble Video. For instance, here are the standard video recording settings on iOS.
- 720p HD at 30fps: 40MB per minute (Recommended)
- 1080p HD at 30fps: 60MB per minute
- 1080p HD at 60fps : 90MB per minute
- 4K at 24fps: 135MB per minute
- 4K at 30fps: 170MB per minute
- 4K at 60fps: 400MB per minute
TIP: We recommend 720p HD to make sure you create the smallest video possible because it will give you the best chance of uploading your video to Ensemble Video.
Video Recording Length
One really easy way to reduce the overall size of your video is to reduce the length of the recording. The way you do this will vary based on the circumstances.
TIP: If you have a long video, you may want to record it into segments to reduce loading time. Try to keep your videos as brief as possible and cut out any unnecessary parts during the recording process.
Internet and Cellular Network Status & Upload Speeds
I think most of us will agree that our Internet and Cell Networks can be painfully slow at certain times of the day or based on where we are using our device.
If you are experiencing issues uploading from your iOS device to Ensemble Video, please review real-time problem and outage monitoring systems, such as Down Detector. For example, this tool will allow you to diagnose if your Verizon cellular network is experiencing issues, which may create problems when uploading videos from your cell phone. Also, we encourage you to run a speed test (Ookla or Google) to test your available upload bandwidth. For example, if you are having Internet bandwidth issues, you may issues uploading content.
TIP: Run a speed test to determine whether your Wifi or Cellular network upload speed is faster. Make sure you are using the faster network. If you are not a techie, when you review a speed test just know the higher the number (typically in Mbps), the faster the network. For example, 2 Mbps Upload is faster than 0.18 Mbps Upload. Of course you'll want to use the faster network to upload your video into Ensemble Video.
What are slow upload speeds?
Upload speeds below 3 Mbps are generally considered slow internet speeds because they can don't easily handle the common upload activities of an average user. For example, uploading a 100MB file from your iPhone would take:
- 60 minutes over a 0.25 Mbps connection
- 30 minutes 0.5 Mbps connection
- 15 minutes over a 1 Mbps connection
- 5 minutes over a 3 Mbps connection
- 1 minute and 30 seconds over a 10 Mbps connection
- 17 seconds over 50Mbps connection
